How to find an IRC roleplay channel

How to browse listings, read topics, and find a room that fits your style.

Start with the directory

Use the roleplay channel directory to filter by genre, new-player friendliness, scheduled play, and 18+ status where available. The directory is the fastest way to compare rooms without joining each one blind.

  • Look for a premise that gives you something to do immediately.
  • Look for a rules link or at least a clear code of conduct.
  • Look for activity notes that match your timezone and availability.

Read the signs of a healthy room

A good roleplay listing does not need to be long, but it should make the first step obvious. If the listing only says welcome, the channel topic or OOC room should fill in the gaps.

  • The premise is clear enough to pitch to a friend in one sentence.
  • The channel says whether walk-ins are allowed.
  • There is a path for new players to ask questions.
  • Rules are findable before conflict happens.

Give quiet rooms a fair chance

IRC rooms can look quiet because people idle. That does not mean there is no community. It may mean the room wakes up during scheduled scenes or when someone starts conversation in OOC.

The best approach is to say what you are looking for and wait a bit. If no one answers, try again at a different time or check events for scheduled activity.

  • Good: Hello, I found this room in the directory. Are new characters open right now?
  • Good: I am looking for fantasy freeform roleplay. Is there an OOC room I should join first?
  • Less useful: Anyone here?
