How to move a Discord roleplay community to IRC
A low-risk approach for introducing IRC without forcing everyone to move at once.
Do not make the move all at once
A successful migration usually starts with one useful IRC room, not a demand that everyone abandon the place they already know. Give people a reason to try IRC before asking them to change habits.
- Start with one IC room, one OOC room, or one event channel.
- Schedule a scene that is easier to follow in IRC.
- Use webchat links so Discord users can try without installing anything.
Use bridges carefully
A bridge can help both sides share a room while people learn the new space. It can also create confusion if moderation, formatting, and expectations are not clear.
- Tell users when messages are crossing between platforms.
- Decide which side handles moderation issues.
- Avoid bridging private or staff-only spaces casually.
- Request help if you need Discord, Twitch, Matrix, Slack, or IRC-to-IRC bridging.
Build new habits
People return to places that have rhythm. Use scheduled scenes, recurring prompts, event listings, and clear OOC planning so IRC becomes part of the community routine.
- Post the next scene time in the topic or event calendar.
- Use a short recap after major scenes.
- Make one person responsible for welcoming new IRC users during events.
- Keep Discord announcements simple and point people toward the IRC room.
