How to register a channel

Use ChanServ to protect a room and manage access.

Before you register

Make sure you are using a registered nickname and that the channel name is clear, readable, and not misleading. A good channel name is short enough to remember and close to the community name.

  • Use #YourWorld for the main room.
  • Use #YourWorld-OOC for planning if you need a separate OOC room.
  • Avoid names that impersonate another community or official network channels.

Basic ChanServ flow

Join the room first, then register it. If a command fails, ask ChanServ for help or ask in #square. Channel services exist to protect the room, not to replace active moderation.

  • /join #YourWorld
  • /msg ChanServ REGISTER #YourWorld Description
  • /msg ChanServ HELP REGISTER
  • /msg ChanServ HELP ACCESS

Operate it like a community asset

A registered channel should not depend on one person remembering every detail. Add trusted helpers, document rules, and keep ownership clear enough that the room can survive vacations, burnout, and staff changes.

  • Add only people you trust with the level of access you give them.
  • Review access lists when staff leave.
  • Keep rules and contact information findable.
  • Submit the channel to the SorceryNet directory so people can discover it.
